Lawyers and websites used to be like oil and water, but this is rapidly changing.

Australian law firm websites have evolved from simple online brochures to sophisticated interactive tools that are increasingly being targeted at specific groups.

The latest in firm website design includes recruitment pages for graduates, sometimes run through separate "shadow sites"; private intranet "deal rooms" for clients; and online community pages to help alumni stay in touch.

Gadens Lawyers last year became the first to put video podcasts, or vodcasts, on its website. Business development director Catherine Oates Smith said the vodcasts had been very successful with clients, as Gadens' lawyers were encouraged to display their true personalities. "Gadens has a general philosophy of openness, accessibility, and access to partners and we wanted to reflect this in the website," she said.
