Where to From Here? The Future of Small To Mid-Sized Law Firms

  • SYDNEY CBD NSW, 2000 Australia (map)

For more than three decades, Dr Neil Oakes has watched the Australasian legal profession evolve through a continual sedimentary process, layer upon layer. Management fads have come and gone, alternative models have gained momentum only to lose it, and most so-called ‘strategic threats’ have failed to materialise. Through it all, the legal industry has remained remarkably resilient.

As Neil approaches his long-planned retirement, one question stands out: Where to from here for Australasian lawyers?

In his final workshop he’ll share insights from 36 years of experience — what makes the best firms successful and where the legal profession is headed next.

This workshop will help attendees

  1. Understand what truly drives law firm success beyond trends and fads

  2. Refine strategies for profitability, productivity and pricing in a changing market

  3. Navigate the future of firm leadership from ownership models to partner performance

  4. Leverage AI and technology effectively in small and mid-sized firms

  5.  Prepare for the next phase whether as a leader, owner or future partner.

This won’t be just another theoretical discussion - it’s a chance to reflect on the big picture, challenge assumptions, and gain clarity on what sets the best firms apart. Whether you’re looking for validation, fresh perspectives, or simply a moment to step back and think about the future, this workshop will provide a thoughtful, experience-driven exploration of where to from here.
